Deseret Cattle and Citrus farm. It turns out that I (Jenny) have a distant cousin who is an engineer at the Deseret Cattle and Citrus farm about an hour outside of Orlando. My mom met him at his grandma's funeral and began talking and made the connection that he worked at the farm and we were going to be visiting the area, and he offered to take us on an airboat ride and tour. It is a huge 300,000 acre ranch, primarily used to raise cattle, but also used to produce juicing oranges, sod, and various other products. It was fun to meet our relatives and great to see the ranch. We were able to pick oranges and were discussing in the photo how we thought they would harvest all of these oranges, by hand or machine. It turns out that they do them all by hand. Orange picking is a little tricky because if you don't pull just right, the part of the peel which connects to the tree stays on the tree so you have a big hole in your peel. But luckily we weren't picking to sell. :)
The airboat ride was incredible. My cousins wife watched Maya while we went because the fans are really loud and we had to wear ear protection. We saw somewhere between 50 and 60 aligators and many different types of birds. The canal we went on is on the ranch property and then connects to a bigger channel of water. Look closely at the pictures and you can see the aligators sunning themselves. They were pretty scared of the fan noise, and all dove for the water when they heard us coming. Because the water is only about a foot deep in some areas, we felt a bump when we went over the aligators. My cousin said they call that "gator dunking."
Maya met up with a friendly gator at the visitors center and we all enjoyed a nice refreshing cup of water. (The weather was about 80 degrees).
